“SAGE COULEE DEVELOPMENT” MASTER PLAN
MHA Nation
RML Architects and our sub-consultant partners are assisting the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa Nation with overall development and masterplanning of the 140-acre Sage Coulee site in north Bismarck. The MHA Nation endeavors to create an extensive continuing care treatment program, and outreach services program for local tribal members. The overall master plan is to be completed in multiple phases of design and construction.
Good Road Recovery Center, located on 22-acres sub-site in within the Sage Coulee area, was completed in 2018 with the goal of offering a culturally significant substance recovery for members. The treatment program is fully owned and operated by the Three Affiliated Tribes, MHA Nation. This project includes the Outpatient Treatment Center, separate male and female Residential Care Cottages, a Sweat Lodge, a BBQ patio, an 80-seat Outdoor Amphitheater and a detached Maintenance Garage. The treatment facility was expanded in 2023 and 2 additional care cottages were completed in 2025.
The Sage Coulee Outreach and Wellness Center was opened for operation in June 2020 with the idea of this facility to focus on the health and wellbeing of its elder members, and a vision to improve the overall health of its members and the community.
The Healing Hearts Lodge Female Transitional Housing facility was dedicated for service in June 2021 and offers women with families graduating from the adjacent Good Road Recovery Center on-site residential treatment program.
Future phases include a Women’s Crisis Safety Center, a Male Transitional Housing Unit, a licensed Community Child Care Facility, a Community Maintenance Facility for the entire Sage Coulee – Memory First Addition, an Outdoor Park, and Independent Living apartments.
