Child Safety Center, New Town, ND

The Child Safety Center is a 4,500 SF facility, located on MHA’s Public Safety and Justice Center Campus in New Town, ND. Previously, BIA Police had jurisdiction over child custody matters, forcing them to care for very young, at risk children at the justice center. Recognizing the acute need to keep young children from exposure to the justice system, Chairman Fox envisioned an emergency children’s shelter care center for the community’s youngest members when they are in need.

The facility and operations are designed for safe and secure protective custody in a home-like environment for non-offending children between 3-10 years old while family reunification is worked out. The program has capacity for 10-16 children, providing shared bedrooms, indoor and outdoor activity spaces, and an open style kitchen all with 24/7 supervision and security.

In addition to the children focused programs, the facility includes management and case offices space, a public waiting and lobby space, an ICC 500 tornado shelter and full redundant back-up power systems.
